Design dilemma

I am still having fun with my Blue and White version of the Antique Wedding Sampler by Di Ford. Here is block 6, another one of the beautiful sunburst style hand pieced blocks with some Broderie Perse.

This quilt is destined for my Master bedroom where much of our collection of Blue and White Chinese pottery is displayed. Here is a picture of the bedroom, though the quilt will probably end up not on the bed but on the wall opposite.

So here is my minor dilemma. I have decided to modify the vase block in the quilt to reflect the Chinese pottery and to give the bouquet a more Asian look. I am pretty happy with the placement of the Broderie Perse bouquet and the vase shape but cannot decide between the two different vase fabrics. Actually they are both from the same fabric but one is predominantly dark and the there light. I will be placing this block in the center of the quilt.

So which do you think looks better, dark or light? I can't finish all of the appliqué on the flowers until I decide and I keep going back and forth between the two. Help me out and let me know what you think, I am also going to post in the FB group related to Di Ford quilts and ask. Should be fun to see what everyone thinks!

  1. I prefer the first vase as the darker lower part gives it more "weight". It just looks more balanced to me and somehow looks more Asian.

  6. I like the second one (major minority). The reason I like it, is because the light strips are below the flower clusters. Just a personal feeling!!

  7. I immediately 'liked' the darker vase; I think the darker colour makes it a little edgier and this would naturally draw the eye to the center. But, of course, both are lovely. What a beauty this will be!

  8. Oh wow! Your broderie perse is amazing Heather. I too prefer the darker vase as it provides more of a contratst to the flowers. This quilt is going to look amazing in your bedroom - did you make the blue & white cushions??

  12. Definitely the darker vase in the first picture because it gives the vase more weight at the base! This is going to be a fabulous quilt!

  13. Honestly, I love them both, but I'm leaning towards the lighter vase. Also, I love the color of the walls in your room. I scored a Chinese vase style rug at a huge discount at Ethan Allen this spring and I've been trying to find just the right color for the walls. Would you share the source for your paint?

  14. This quilt is going to look amazing in your room. It's the perfect fabric. Not to be wishy washy, but they both look great. Any difference when you put it with the rest of the blocks?

  15. Very pretty in blue and white. Either vase fabric works but I like the darker one better. But then, I tend to gravitate towards the darker shades to start with.

  17. I would go with the dark since it is more noticeable and you want to draw attention to the quilt and pottery together...:)

  18. i prefer the dark vase, from a visual standpoint.

but i think the lighter vase looks more chinese. my first reaction to the darker vase was that it reminded me more of english china rather than a chinese vase.

  19. I think that if you used the light, you may lose your vase. So, I vote for the dark.
